Multi-Physics Comparison of Surface-Mounted and Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor for High-Speed Applications

For high-speed permanent magnet machines (HSPMMs), two different rotor structures are widely used: surface-mounted (SPM) and interior (IPM). The have a large impact on the comprehensive performance in multiple physical fields of HSPMMs, including mechanical stress, electromagnetic characteristics, temperature distribution. However, multi-physics comparison is rare existing literature, which makes it difficult for designers to choose suitable structure. Therefore, this paper, SPM IPM comprehensively compared analyzed. Firstly, were designed under 60 kW 30,000 rpm with condition same stator structure, winding type volume. Secondly, ensure that meet stress-field constraints, finite element model (FEM) was built Ansys Workbench. influence parameters stress Following this, characteristics distributions motors analyzed through FEM. Finally, prototype an structure selected manufactured. validity analysis design verified experimental measurements. above will provide reference when designer chooses HSPMM.
